Hi Brian, I have never compared side-by-side the two lenses (I understand you're referring to the 70-200/2.8 S vs the 70-200/2.8 FL, both with a fluorite element). At 200mm the new Nikon softens just a little in the center (shown at 4mm off axis here) and its predecessor is actually a bit sharper. But looking further away from the optical axis the new Nikon re-establishes its lead over all competitors.

70-200 FL @200mm f/2.8 quite close to the subject. The 300mm PF let you stand away a bit from this guy doing his scary mating dance thing. Still pretty sharp result. 300mm PF + TC-14e III gives some really neat closeup possibilities as well. Let us know what you take. Lovely images, Rico. I think it will be the 300!
On paper, the new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL VR looks stunning – its MTF charts look better than pretty much any other 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on the market and being a lighter and sharper lens than its predecessor, as well as not having focus breathing issues, certainly make it a top choice for many types of photography.
Recommendations Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL (metal 77mm filter thread, 50.3 oz./1,425g with tripod collar, 3.6'/1.1m close-focus, $1,897 new or about $1,500 used if you know How to Win at eBay .) bigger. I got mine at Adorama; I'd also get it at Amazon, at B&H, at Crutchfield or used at eBay.
